Tip # 2 | Top 5 tips for international students in NZ

We all hate to admit when we don't know something!!

Especially when you are in a new country, new surroundings, amongst new faces and sounds; trying to figure out your own way could not just result in more work but additional stress as well.

So, I am here to tell you: It's OK to ask!! We don't know everything and it's alright to admit that. Actually sometimes this could be your best strategy and my Tip # 2

# 2 Seek Support

Remember, there is nothing wrong in asking for help

  • Even if you come from a culture or a country where asking for help is considered to be rude or inappropriate.
  • Ask for help even if you are shy; it would be difficult for the first few times but it will come out right.
  • Asking for help is not a sign of weakness
  • But please be polite when you ask for help
  • In general, you want to be clear, concise, complete and polite

Reach out to your friends and family

  • Remember if your friends don't motivate you or inspire you, (for the right things of course) they are not your friends.
  • Even if these 'so called' friends belong to your country or they are your flat mates, they are not your friends.
  • Be in constant touch with your family; don't hide anything from your folks.

Reach out to your Lecturers, Student Support Services and the Alumni

  • Feel free to talk to your Lecturers regarding anything that bothers you
  • You have your Marketing Managers, Administration Staff, and your Career Advisors to always assist you.

Do you have a mentor?

  • If not, do you know how to make one?
  • Do you know the advantages of having a mentor?
  • Do you know the responsibilities of being a mentee?

Here's what I have learnt about people who offer to help:
  1. They are sincere in their offer; they mean it.
  2. The responsibility falls on me, not on them, to follow up.
  3. The best way to take them up on their offer is to request them a specific task.
And needless to mention Tip # 1 is important all the way. Click on this link, in case you've missed it!!

Help yourself by asking for help & seeking support!!

Tip # 3 following soon.
